I really, really enjoyed this read a lot . Well written, visually appealing, and based by facts.nMy pe1onal opinion was always that games were centered around the male population because of the natural trends that more males played games than females. It wasn&1quo;t marketed that way, nor was it intended to be that way: it just was. Then we notice that much later, as the internet becomes popular, people start picking apart these things because now there is a voice to be heard, and many people can hear it.nFor me, the problem isn&1quo;t that games are designed for men or women. I watch a lot from Feminist Frequency, who doesn&1quo;t like the ideas of damsels in distress in games because she feels that it is empowering the males (nevermind that it&1quo;s just a popular trope to begin with; movies, books, history, you name it). I think that as good as these articles are, it is these articles and the people who are trying too hard to make gaming gender neutral that escalate the problem. Call something out in front of people&1quo;s faces, and you&1quo;ll be sure to find folks who will argue with you until you&1quo;re blue in the face.nI try and correct my mistakes as I go along: I don&1quo;t refer to game1 as ‘guy&1quo; or ‘girl&1quo; game1 anymore, I don&1quo;t recommend games that look like they belong to women to game1, but go rather by their skill level now. Not great at games? Try something simpler like a puzzle game or a casual game. Been gaming for a while? Give Mario or Zelda a shot. And so on. It&1quo;s all about our approach. I&1quo;m not saying that we ignore it, because there are enough people talking about it that it seems to be a clear issue, but what are the REAL goals here?nIf you are looking for develope1 to start making more games with female leads, it&1quo;s not going to happen. The gaming industry has seen male leads since the dawn of the golden age of gaming, and that&1quo;s not going away anytime soon. We have seen some female leads, but then the gripes come around that they are made “not like a real woman.” Well last I checked guys usually aren&1quo;t hulking 6&1quo;2″ men with bulging muscles in full plate armor either. Men and women in gaming are over-exaggerated equally, because it&1quo;s supposed to invoke your imagination, not be a representation of real life.nIf you&1quo;re looking for develope1 to stop making women wear skimpy armor… okay, I&1quo;ll give you that. It would be nice to see a guy running around in a thong every once in a while. 😛 No, I jest of cou1e. If you&1quo;ve played FFXIV, my Roegadyn practically had on assless chaps and it was embarrassing, so I can definitely unde1tand where women are coming from on this one.nIf your goal though is to stop having men in the industry talk down on women for skill, prowess, or knowledge of the industry, then we actually have a goal that can be actively worked on. To me, and this is solely my opinion, this is probably the biggest thing that needs worked on. We need to have men stop hitting on and abusing women in the chat lobbies. Men need to stop being surprised when a woman is playing a game. Men need to start to accept the fact that gaming is no longer prevalent among men as it used to be, and start giving credit where credit is due. After all, I know I can stand my ground in most games, but there are definitely plenty of women I know who could own me any day in a FPS game with their eyes closed.nEqual rights don&1quo;t stop when the controller is picked up. This shouldn&1quo;t even be an issue anymore. I miss the days when gaming was used as a common medium for people with like minded interests could talk about something that they know and love. I1tead it&1quo;s become a small warzone, where game1 who are better than other game1 choose to bash and i1ult the inexperienced ones i1tead of teaching them, and gende1 somehow play a role in how skilled one can be at a game.nOkay. Done with my soapbox rant. 🙂
